Dogs fall to UCLA

I want to say sorry. Things have been really crazy the past 2 days between softball and work.

The Fresno State Bulldogs fall to UCLA 9-5 in the final game of the LA regional. The bats came alive for the dogs getting 8 hits and 5 runs. The problem was we couldn't get the pitching. Moh ran out of gas and the UCLA hitters were not fooled. They scored 8 runs off of the Fresno State Ace.

The future is bright for dog fans with Melloh and Oakes in the circle. Add Soph Ortega to the current line-up this team should be loaded with talent for next years run in the playoffs.

Fresno gets...

...the Host school UCLA. The Bruins are the #2 overall seed. The bats need to continue to roll for the Dogs if they want to stay in the winners bracket.

Fresno State/UNLV

Player of the game

Morgan Melloh, Soph P

If we didnt give Morgan Melloh the player of the game "title" it would be a crime (kind of like not giving her the Pitcher of the year award, but thats a different story). The first 12 outs record by strike out for Morgan. She ended the game with 16 total, one more than her previous 7-inning high of 15 against USU last year. Her all time personal record is 20 in the marathon against the Wahine earlier this year. She gave up 6 hits over the 7 inning CG, only letting one Rebel score.

Fresno State now waits for the the winner UCLA/LBSU game for the 1 PM game tommorrow.

Melloh vs Holverson?

In 2008 Fresno State pitcher Morgan Melloh came onto the college softball scene in a big way. She was named the Freshman of the Year and Pitcher of the Year. First team All-WAC/West Region/Easton sports All-American and 2nd team NFCA All-American.

Fast Forward to 2009. Morgan continues to roll through opposing teams line-ups like a hot knife through butter. This year, however, she was not named WAC Pitcher of the Year. Katie Holverson was given that honor. Lets take a look at both players stats

Holverson
overall (WAC only)
27-9 (8-0)
1.66 ERA (1.77 ERA)
5 Shut Outs (2)
238.0 IP (71.1)
226 Ks (75)
67 BBs (17)
.208 B/AVG (.249)

Melloh

28-14 (12-2)
1.48 ERA (1.14 ERA)
17 Shut Outs (5)
297.2 IP (111)
414 Ks (133)
100 BB (16)
.167 B/AVG (.177)

Here are the Numbers. Do you agree with the WACs choice?

Melloh All-West Pick

According to Gobulldogs.com Fresno State Ace Morgan Melloh has been named to the All-West Region team. This is the second time in her first two years she has been named to this team. She is now eligible for the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American team. She was named a 2nd teamer las year.

UNLV

Fresno State will open with UNLV. The Rebels ended their season tied for third place (7-8). They finished their year at 31-19 over all. They are also coming into post season play on a low note dropping a 7-1 game to San Diego State in their last game.

The Rebels are hitting .304 as a team, lead by Ashli Holland (.342). UNLV is also lead by Jaci Hull in RBIs and HRs (50 RBIs, 11 HRs).

The problem for the Rebels it seems is their pitching. As a team their ERA is just north of 4. The lowest regular pitcher has an ERA of 4.01 (Traci Odegard and Stephan Breante). Opposing teams are hitting just south of .300 against the Rebel Hurlers. No Rebel has more than 60 strike outs.

The 4 seed, Long Beach State

LBSU comes into the LA regional with a 34-19 record. Like Fresno State and UCLA they are coming into the tournament on a hot streak winning 5 in a row and 10 of there last 12 games. The 49ers finished in 3rd place of the Big West.

In the boxes the niners are hitting .273 as a team. The team is lead by Sr Danielle Linke (.353, 25 RBIs and 7 home runs). While another Sr, Jennifer Griffin, leads the team in RBIs (40).

In the circle Long Beach has two good options, Fr Taylor Petty and So Brooke Turner. Petty is 15-4 with a 1.41 ERA. Brooke is 17-11 with a 2.34 ERA. Turner leads the Niners with 145 Strike outs.

A closer look

Over the next couple of days we are going to take a closer look at each opponent in the LA regional with Fresno State. Let’s start with the host school, UCLA. UCLA comes into the NCAA tournament red hot winning 6 in a row and 15 of the last 16.

As a team the Bruins are hitting .322. They are lead by Katie Schroeder at a .417 clip. UCLA only has 2 starters batting under the .300 mark. The Bruins have some pop behind there bats too, hitting 72 out of the park. Kaila Shull leads UCLA with 55 RBIs.

It looks like the Bruins split time in the circle between Megan Langenfeld and Donna Kerr. Langenfeld has a 0.93 ERA and a record of 14-1. She will also see time at First were she has the 3rd highest Batting average for the Bruins. Kerr is 18-6 with a 2.55 ERA. She also leads the team with 221 strike outs.

UCLA and Fresno State has a few opponents in common, seven to be exact. UCLA went 7-6 (not including head-to-head) while Fresno went 4-4 against teams they had in common. The Highlight win out of that group would be winning 3 of 4 from Washington.

28 and counting!

The Fresno State Softball team already knew they were in the NCAA tournament going into the selection show. All they needed to find out was who and where? The team had to wait till the last bracket of the show to find out. The place is LA. The team is UNLV. The Bulldogs hold a 46-9 record over the Rebels, winning the last 4 in a row. In 2008 Fresno State won 2-0. Morgan Melloh had 11 Ks in the Complete Game Shut out. She also only gave up one hit and one walk.

UCLA is hosting the Regional. They will play Long Beach State. FS lost to both teams in 6 innings (UCLA 10-2, LBSU 8-0). Fresno State bats will need to stay hot if they want to get past these regional match-ups.

Were will the Dogs play?

With the selection show tomorrow, Fresno will have to wait to hear were they are going. This will be the 28th consecutive trip to NCAA post season play. Fresno State is the only team to qualify for all 28 Tournaments.

Possible spots are Stanford, UCLA and Cal. UCLA and Stanford being in the top 5 and Cal in the top 15. It is nearly impossible for FS to host this year with 7 other west coast teams in the top 25.

Fresno State Wins Tourny Crown

-Soph SS, Haley Gilleland Hit a walk off single in the bottom of the 8th to win the WAC Tournament Crown. She went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a Stolen Base. The Pack Coach elected to walk Perkins to load the bases with 2 outs. That turned out to be the wrong decision.

-Morgan Melloh Was named the Tournament MVP. She pitched all 22 innings for Fresno State, only giving up 2 runs and striking out 27 in the 3 games. Fellow Bulldogs Gilleland and Coronado were also named to the All-Tournament team.

Player of the game

Haley Gilleland- She came up huge for the Dogs in high pressure spots. In the 4th inning with Phips on 2nd with one out, Haley hit a single scoring Phipps pushing the dogs up 2-1. In 8th she hit the walk-off single. The top of the 7th she made a very good play getting the speedy Micka out with after the lead off single. She fielded the ball going away from first, stopped, then gunned out the runner by a half step. The Pack would of scored later in that inning had she been save.

Fresno/LaTech Highlights

-In the 4th inning Morgan Melloh Struck out her 400th batter. after today her total for the year is 408 and 862 in her 2 years as a Bulldog.

-Moses, Lujan and Stig continue to wow Fresno fans with the Potintial power. Each of the above listed have just missed knocking bombs out of Bulldog Diamond on multiple occasins during the first 2 games of the WAC Tournament.

Player of the Game

Lisamarie Coronado is the first ever FSsoftball Player of the Game. The Jr RF from Hemet, Calif. had possibly her best outing this year. She went 3-4 with a double and a run scored. She seemed to get the innings started off on the right foot by pounding the LaTech pitchers for some hard hits. The one time she did not get on base could of been the nail to end the game in 6 innings. With bases loaded and 2 outs Lima Smacked a towering shot to left that was knocked down by the strong Bulldog Diamond wind just shy of the fense. The LaTech LF was standing with in 2-3 from the Fense. That Shot would of been gone in almost any other park in the WAC.

Fresno State to take on defending champs, LaTech.

Fresno State will face the Lady Techsters for the third time this season, Fresno winning 2 out of 3 in Ruston. The 2 teams will probably send out there 2 aces with a spot in the championship game on the line. The Lady Techsters will probably send out there 2nd-Team All-WAC Meghan Krieg. She had a record of 20-5 with a 1.75 ERA (second in WAC). She also Struck out 208 batters good for 4th in the WAC. Fresno State will probably send out Morgan Melloh. “Moh” leads the WAC in almost every category including winning the “Triple Crown” of pitching for the second straight year strike outs (397), Wins (26), ERA (1.51) and opposing.

As a recap, Fresno State Beat the Techsters 7-0 and 3-0 before dropping a heart breaker in 10 innings (1-0). Morgan Melloh pitched very well getting the 2 wins not giving up a single run and striking out 29 Techsters in 18.1. Haley Perkins Lead the way for the Bulldogs bats going 5-10 with 2 RBIs, 4 Runs and 2 walks. LaTechs lone score came off a HR given up by Mackenzie Oackes in the 10th.

Keys for LaTech to win-

Latech need to get Moh out of the game. They were able to chase Morgan out in there long win after 4.1 innings. There bats have been hot in the tournament blasting 4 HRs in a pitchers ballpark. Also the Krieg that showed up in the 3rd game needs to show up for Tech to win. The Bulldogs have proven to be inconstant for most of the season. If Krieg can shut down the bottom half of the line (5-9 spots) they are going to be in a great spot to win this game.

Keys for Fresno State to win-

Fresno needs to stay patient and continue to mash the ball. The bottom of the order has really stepped up big for the Bulldogs the last few weeks of the season. Phipps in particular has come alive hitting .600 with 8 RBIs and 6 Runs scored over the last 6 games.

May 7, 2009

Fresno/Boise Highlights

-Morgan Melloh continues to roll through WAC Teams. After the shaky first, Moh settled down and struck out 10 batters over the next 6.1 innings. Moh needs 3 more Ks to get back-to-back 400 K Seasons. The shut out marks her 16 Shut out This year.

-The Bulldogs continue to pund the ball, just missing multiple HR/Hits. Moses went 0-3, but it was a loud 0-3. In 2 different ABs, she smoked pitches that would of been out in almost any other park. The wind was really blowing this morning.

-Lujan and Lima both had Clutch ABs in the 6th. Lujan put the Dogs on the board with a 2-out, 2 RBI single to Right. Lujan then advanced to 2nd on the heads up running. Lima Pushed the last 2 runs home on the first pitch she see. It was a base hit that just went pass the reach of the Bronco 2B. Lujan was robbed of a 2-out RBI in the bot of the 4th by an amazing diving catch in Center.

-LF Mallory Perkins has left the team for Personal Reasons.

First Real Post

This is the First post for my blog. I just thought it would be a good Idea to get somthing started for the National Power Softball team at Fresno State.

This week Fresno State is hosting the WAC tourney. Fresno will play its first game of the tourney tommorrow (Thursday) against Boise State @ 10 AM. The Bulldogs swept the Broncos in Boise earlier this year. This will be the first time the Broncos play in Fresno. Boise beat San Jose State 8-4 today to earn that right to play Fresno.
Go dogs.
